Session 1: The Fate of Frosthaven, Part 1
January 20, 118 SE
We begin in the town of Duskveil, a small settlement of about 1000 inhabitants, located about a week's travel to the west of the metropolis Vornheim. Duskveil and the surrounding area have recently been ravaged by an extremely severe blizzard that lasted for several days. The blizzard ended nearly a week ago, but the roads in and out of town are still blocked by the snow and ice.
One traveller who was trapped in the town by the blizzard is the halfling bard, Elvish Parsley. During the time of the blizzard and its aftermath, he has occupied himself by performing for the townsfolk and telling highly exaggerated stories about his career as an adventurer. On this particular day, he is summoned by a runner who tells him that the mayor of Duskveil has requested his presence.
Elvish goes to meet the mayor, who explains to him the problem that he needs help with. Duskveil has an agreement with the surrounding villages that, in the event of a disaster, natural or otherwise, each town will send messengers to each other town after the disaster is over. However, the messenger from the nearby village of Frosthaven never arrived, and the messengers sent from Duskveil to Frosthaven never returned. Worried, the mayor ordered a captain of the guard to assemble a party of adventurers from among the town's inhabitants and go to Frosthaven to find out what happened. This party also never returned.
The mayor presents his proposal to Elvish: he's heard of the halfling's supposed heroism, and he wants him to head up a third expedition to discover what happened to the first two. He's gathered all of the money that the town can spare - a total of 250 gold pieces - as a reward. Elvish accepts, but he also bargains for two additional concessions - first, the mayor will commission a painting of Elvish to hang in the tavern, and second, Elvish will have exclusive rights to sing stories about his adventures in Duskveil.
The mayor suggests that Elvish try to find other to accompany him in his expedition. In particular, he mentions that there is a druid who lives outside of town and who might be able to serve as a guide. Elvish heads into town and starts looking for adventurers to join him.
The first adventurer that he meets is a young man dressed in black. He doesn't give his name at first, but Elvish eventually learns that he calls himself Darkstar (and that his real name is actually Brian York). Darkstar's gloomy attitude immediately puts him at odds with the cheerful halfling, but he's looking for any excuse to get out of Duskveil, so he agrees to join him.
Elvish also travels to the temple of Vorn to see if they can lend him any assistance. The priest there, a dwarf named Enthing, is reluctant to send anyone - he already sent a cleric on the previous expedition, and she did not return. Elvish pleads with him, and eventually he concedes to at least ask the resident paladin if he will go. The paladin, a half-elf named Calanon Thorne, agrees to join Elvish, mostly because he suspects that Elvish is not competent enough to actually lead the expedition and he wants to find the missing priest.
After leaving the temple, Elvish is approached by a half-elf wizard named Ellyanna, who would also like to join the expedition. He graciously allows her to join.
Elvish continues recruiting for the expedition, amassing another dozen or so volunteers, all regular townsfolk with no particular fighting or adventuring skills. However, after Darkstar and Calanon impress upon them the probable danger of the mission, all except three leave. The three remaining townsfolk are Vilhelm, a carpenter, and Harmon and Conall, farmers.
The group head to the druid's cabin outside of the town. When they arrive, the cabin is surrounded by wolves. One of the wolves drops down from the roof of the cabin and shapeshifts into a man. He explains that he is the druid, but when Elvish explains the mission, he doesn't seem particularly keen on accompanying the group. The bard argues with him, and he eventually decides to send his apprentice with them, a lizardborn woman with no name other than "Grrrr Yip". He tells Grrrr Yip that he's taught her everything he can, and it's time for her to go out into the world and find her own family rather than remaining with his.
By this time, it's midday and the group decide to start heading toward Frosthaven. They travel for the rest of the day; when it's time to rest, Vilhelm builds them a shelter and they sleep for the night.
January 21, 118 SE
The party decide to leave the three non-combatant townsfolk behind to tend to their shelter, and the five adventurers continue on towards Frosthaven. They travel for about half the day before the village finally comes into sight. From a distance nothing seems amiss, so they continue walking towards the village.
About half an hour away from the village, they finally come upon something unusual - a body lying frozen in the snow. As they approach, they see that several sets of tracks lead from the town to the body, the snow around the body is disturbed and the body is lying in a pool of frozen blood. Darkstar attempts to use his powers to communicate with the body, in case it's still alive, but there is no response.
Calanon approaches the body to investigate it, but when he steps close to it, suddenly six undead skeletons burst out from the snow and attack. They surround him and severely wound him before the rest of the party have a chance to react.
Battle is joined, and the party fight a difficult battle against the six creatures, unleashing their various magics and weapons against them. Eventually, all six skeletons are destroyed, and Elvish and Grrrr Yip are able to heal the group of any serious injuries using their bardic and druidic magic. The snow in the area is thoroughly melted away by several fire spells cast by Ellyanna.
After taking a few minutes to heal and catch their breath, the party investigate the body and the skeletons. The body seems to be an ordinary villager; Calanon doesn't recognize him so he's most likely from Frosthaven, and he seems to have died from slashing wounds to his back. The skeletons themselves seem to be fairly undecayed; they must be either recently animated, or just very well preserved. Ellyanna looks at the swords that they were armed with, and recognizes them as a style of shortsword used widely during the time of the First Empire, over 1000 years ago. These swords are in good condition, so they must also be either newly forged or very well preserved.
As the party continue to approach Frosthaven, they pass by several more bodies. They inspect the bodies, which seem to have died in a similar way as the first, and though they are prepared for another skeletal ambush, none comes. Eventually, they arrive at the outskirts of Frosthaven and prepare to enter the village proper.
